As you probably know, Windows has a built-in tool to monitor and stop running programs and processes. However, the information it provides is too little when it comes to analyzing an application’s potential threat to your system.
On the contrary, Security Task Manager, the utility being reviewed, can offer much more comprehensive data, such as file types and location. In this regard, the most significant information is a report in which processes are rated according to their probability of being ill-intentioned software.
The application is quite easy to use. Once you start it, the tool arranges current processes based on the analysis of their behavior. If you select one of the applications, you can also read why it is considered dangerous. Some programs are normal, that’s why the tool alerts you that marking a process as potentially malicious does not mean it really is. For instance, Power and Thermal Management developed by Intel appeared on top of the list in my computer because its window is not visible, it can manipulate other programs and it is not a Windows system file. Fortunately, for known programs, Security Task Manager lets you change their risk level. Likewise, you can upload other suspicious programs to VirusTotal to be checked for viruses.
All in all, Security Task Manager can help you identify malware that go undetected by standard antivirus programs. Yet, you should be aware that it cannot protect your computer from all threats and it usually shows a lot of false positives. Luckily, it doesn’t interfere with the work of other AV software.
